J.G. BROWN, N.A. (AMERICAN, 1831-1913), OIL ON CANVAS, H 30", W 25", "IN THE SHADE"

Framed. Signed lower left "Copyright J.G. Brown, N.A." Provenance as per the consignor: purchased by the consignor's great grandfather Adam L Beck. He lived much of his life in Huntington, IN and died in 1939 in Buffalo, NY. The painting then passed to his wife, Lizzie Purviance Beck. Upon her death in 1951 it passed to the consignor's grandmother, Magdalena Beck Taylor. After her death in 1983 it was in the possession of the consignor's mother Miriam Taylor Hyde (now deceased). Appraised for insurance on 6/2/1992 by Jonathan Boos of Frank Boos Gallery, Bloomfield Hills, MI and appraised for Fair Market Value on 9/15/2014 by Joseph McGee of Joseph's World Art and Antique Gallery, Petoskey, MI. Both appraisals were done for Mrs. Hyde (copies in the consignor's file).


Condition:
Good Condition. (Has a great look with excellent detail. As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame: UV clean; not lined or patched; no craquelure; slight, light 1 1/4" vertical scratch in the center of the girl's skirt; period gilt over gesso frame with cracking and patina loss to the wood liner with the rest of the frame being only very slightly nicked with very slight patina wear.
