Bidding FAQs
Buyer’s premium is an additional charge on the gavel price or winning bid at an auction that must be paid by the winning bidder. Our buyer’s premium is 24% and is subject to applicable sales tax. Please note if you are bidding on a third-party marketplace like BidSquare, LiveAuctioneers, or Invaluable, the buyer’s premium will be higher. Please be sure to review their terms.
DuMouchelles does not offer direct shipping or moving. However, we do have a list of shippers that our customers have had positive feedback on, found at www.dumoart.com/shippers. We recommend contacting one or more to receive quotes prior to bidding to ensure shipping estimates are factored into the total cost of your purchase. DuMouchelles receives no compensation from any of these shippers and referrals are supplied as a courtesy to our customers. You may use your own preferred shipper or mover.
DuMouchelles holds monthly auctions, which generally take place over two days. The sessions feature a selection of items which are entirely unique. You may bid in-person, over the phone with one of our representatives, or online on our website. You must register for our auctions in advance in order to bid. We recommend registering at least two (2) business days prior to commencement of the sale to ensure we have time to approve your registration.
Please use our website to submit your absentee bids. You may also use our fillable bid form and once complete, send it to [email protected]. Alternatively, you may call us at the gallery to request a phone bid at +1 (313) 963-6255. We’ll give you a call during the live sale a few lots beforehand. We auction approximately 50-60 lots per hour, depending on the bidding activity.
Please read our Conditions of Sale for more details on bidding registration.
You may register to bid with us online using the “Register to Bid” button found on our upcoming auctions page. Your name, address, phone number, and valid credit card are required for your online registration. Additional information may be requested if you are interested in bidding beyond your bid limit.

Yep – and they’re open to the public! We hold live auctions with an auctioneer and gavel simultaneously with bidders also participating virtually online. Complimentary beverages and snacks are provided. Please don’t feed the auctioneers – they don’t bite but we’re not sure we can afford their appetites.
We’re happy to provide a personal agent to bid on your behalf with you during our sale at the gallery. We would advise you to request these telephone bids at least two (2) business days prior to the session. DuMouchelles will use reasonable efforts to contact them to enable them to participate in the bidding by telephone. We will accept bids by telephone for lots only if our staff is available to take the bids. DuMouchelles is not responsible for failure to contact bidder or for error and omissions in connection with telephone bidding.

Every lot has a pre-auction estimate—the range in which we predict the item may sell at the gavel. Estimates are based on research, current market values, and may be an indication of reserves.
Our auctioneers generally open the bidding at an amount 25-50% under the low estimate, unless absentee “order bidding” (Order bidding definition: Bids that are accepted by time submitted and by bid amount on a first come first serve basis) takes place or there is a reserve (Reserve definition: The minimum price a consignor is willing to accept for an item) on the item. Absentee (Absentee definition: A method of bidding for customers who cannot or do not wish to attend an auction) bids are placed competitively during the auction, reflecting on competing audience, phone, and online bidding participation. You may find our bid increments listed on the “Auction Information” tab on each of our listed auction catalogs.
Not necessarily. Your absentee bid is only taken as far as someone else is willing to bid. When you submit an absentee bid with us, we will bid on your behalf up to that amount. For example, if your maximum absentee bid is $1,000 on a lot and the highest bid before your last incremental bid is $500, your next bid would be $550. If no one bid over your last bid of $550, you would be the successful bidder at $550.
We hold monthly auctions which usually take place over two days.
You can view our print catalog online at our Issuu publisher’s site. You may also find complimentary printed catalogues during auction preview at our gallery.
We sure do! Contact us at [email protected] with the lot number and specific areas you’d like to see or have questions on.
This is called being on the “wrong leg,” an auction term used when placing absentee bids at auction. It is possible to lose out, not to a higher bidder but by being on the ‘wrong leg’. Even if you have left a bid for $100 and the goods sell at $100, if the bidding on your behalf is the lower bidder (i.e. bids up to $95), they are on the wrong leg and you have lost to the person who tops that bid. There are two ways to avoid this common occurrence – either place surplus bids (e.g. ‘plus one’ or, more safely, ‘plus two’) – thus allowing the person to bid once or twice above your ‘maximum’ bid – or attend in person.
DuMouchelles uses Avalara CertCapture to process our sales tax exemptions. Please call us at +1 (313) 963-6255 prior to the sale to receive a link to provide your documentation. This will ensure your order is processed in a timely fashion post-sale.
